Twins are fascinating. They've been the subject of myth and mystery and a source of curiosity to many. Twins are one of the many mysteries, joys, and wonders of pregnancy. Even those who know twins or have them in the family may have some questions about them. Have you ever wondered what causes twins or whether they have their own language? These were the questions I thought of before starting this fact-finding mission.
Pamela Prindle says : "No one is quite sure why, but the Yoruba tribe in West Africa has the highest rate
of twinning in the world. A study concluded that the mother's diet was the cause, being high in cassava, a type of yam or sweet potato. The peelings of this vegetable are thought to contain a chemical that causes hyperovulation. In addition, a 2006 study found that women who consume dairy(Milk) are five times as likely to have twins".
Identical twins occur when one fertilized egg splits into two separate cells. Identical twins have the same genes and are the same sex, so they are very alike, althogh differences in their environment may make them not identical in all things. Identical twins are known as "monozygotic" twins, since they come from one "zygote," or fertilized egg. Triplets, quadruplets, and higher multiples can be monozygotic too.
Non-identical twins occur when two eggs are released at ovulation. Each twin's genes comes from the parents, but the twins don't share the same mix of genes. Nonidentical twins are also known as "fraternal" twins, since they are just any other sibling and can be of a different gender. They're also referred to as "dizygotic" twins, due to the fact that they come from two separate "zygotes," or fertilized eggs. Nonidentical triplets arise when three eggs are released instead of one. This is more likely to occur when ovulation is induced with drugs during fertility treatment.
It is not news that twins can communicate with themselves despite the distance. An instance was when a twin in my friend's house was vomiting and showing signs of pregnancy, when she was asked if she was pregnant, she said NO! but that maybe her twin sister was pregnant. My friend did not believe his sister so they went for a pregnancy test which came out NEGATIVE. Two days later the other twin in Ghana now called the family here in Nigeria and told them to rejoice with her that she is now pregnant!!! Every body was surprised.
Although Science is yet to prove that there exist a supernatural bond between twins, but from the things we see and hear about them, I have no doubt in my mind that they are mystical beings. You can now understand why the Calabar people always killed twins when they were born. Thank God for Mary Slessor who convinced the people that twins were not evil.
